Background
Superabsorbent polymers have been widely used as thickeners in cosmetics and household products since the 1980s. Traditionally, most of these polymers are derived from petroleum-based raw materials, favored for their low cost and ease of use in production. While these materials provide desirable texture and consistency, they come with significant drawbacks: many are non-biodegradable, contribute to soil and marine pollution, and may irritate sensitive skin. In response to growing environmental concerns and regulatory bans, particularly within the European Union (EU), the cosmetics industry is seeking innovative, sustainable alternatives to these petroleum-based polymers.
