EF Polymer has now joined forces with 50 Okinawan companies to begin support for Ukrainian producers affected by the war. Five tons of EF polymer have been delivered as a donation to Ukraine, and preparations will be made for application in farmland after implementing technical support such as usage methods in collaboration with local government agencies in the future.
Background and overview of this project
In Ukraine, the Kahouka dam broke down in the southern Kherson region in June last year, and the local community was greatly affected. In agriculture, there are concerns that irrigation of farmland will become impossible due to the collapse of dams, causing serious issues in crop production. The complete restoration of irrigation equipment will take nearly 7 years, and losses caused by the collapse of the dam are thought to amount to hundreds of billions of yen. Also, the decline in production volume in Ukraine, which is one of the major agricultural countries, will have a major impact on agricultural and feed markets around the world, including Japan.
Our company and supporting companies of this project are now donating EF polymers to Ukrainian producers, and we aim to maintain crop production by encouraging their use in drought-prone regions. EF polymers can absorb 50 times their own weight in water, so they are agricultural materials that contribute to significant water savings and fertilizer savings. Since it can be useful for growing crops even in regions with little water, a certain effect can be expected even on Ukrainian farmland that has lost irrigation facilities.
Last year, when we solicited donations from Okinawan companies under the theme of “Agricultural Support Circle Delivered to Ukraine,” we received applications from over 50 companies, and the project started in earnest. Donations collected from supporting companies are mainly used for the purpose of compensating EF Polymer's overseas transportation costs and expenses necessary for local product utilization.
EF Polymer's Chief Operations Officer (COO) Shimoji KunitakuIt is stated as follows. “I saw reports of a dam collapse in Ukraine and learned about the seriousness of the situation, and immediately contacted the Ukrainian embassy. In order to support Ukrainian producers who continue to support people's lives, this donation was hosted with the hope that while praying for peace, everyone in the industry could join together and expand the circle of support. I am sincerely grateful that we were able to achieve something that could not have been achieved by one company only because of the cooperation of the companies that agreed with us. Going forward, we will work closely with relevant local organizations to support the effective use of our products in drought-stricken zones.”
