News Release
EF Polymer, an Okinawa based startup developing one hundred percent organic super absorbent polymers, has announced that its polymer has been adopted for office planting at the headquarters of Hollywood Co Ltd, located in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo.
Through this initiative, EF Polymer, now in its fifth year since founding, and Hollywood, a cosmetics company with a history spanning a century, will jointly explore new possibilities for sustainable office greenery.
Hollywoods headquarters, known as the Hollywood Beauty Plaza, is located in Roppongi Hills with a direct view of the iconic Mori Tower. Its balcony spaces are planted with a wide variety of greenery.
Founded in 1925, Hollywood has long been recognized as Japans first comprehensive beauty company. The brands origins are rooted in the founders belief in the power of plants, an ethos that continues today through employees who carefully maintain the office greenery.
EF Polymer, founded in 2020, is a startup providing sustainable solutions in agriculture and environmental fields, addressing challenges such as climate change and water scarcity.
In this project, EF Polymer was introduced to a portion of approximately sixty square meters of planting space at Hollywoods Roppongi headquarters. The initiative aims to evaluate the reduction of daily watering workloads and prevent soil drying during non working days such as weekends and public holidays.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is actively promoting urban greening as part of its efforts to mitigate the urban heat island effect. Office greenery is encouraged as one effective approach, and many companies and municipalities are introducing planting initiatives.
At the same time, rising temperatures due to climate change and the burden of water management have become major challenges. Sustainable greening methods are increasingly needed. This project represents a new attempt to address these issues through environmentally responsible materials and practical implementation.
Hollywood, with its one hundred year history, and EF Polymer, a five year old startup, bring together different backgrounds and perspectives to explore the future of environmentally conscious urban greening.
EF Polymer aims to position this initiative at Hollywoods headquarters as a representative model case, supporting the expansion of greenery projects that are considerate of both people and the environment.
EF Polymer is a deep tech startup born in India and grown in Okinawa. The company upcycles agricultural waste such as orange and banana peels to produce and sell one hundred percent organic super absorbent polymer materials for agricultural use.
In addition, EF Polymer promotes the application of fully organic polymers as raw materials for daily consumer goods and cosmetics, supporting corporate green transformation initiatives. Through the wider adoption of its technology, the company aims to contribute to solving environmental challenges, particularly water scarcity.
A demonstration experiment has begun at Hollywoods headquarters garden in Roppongi Hills using EF Polymer, a one hundred percent plant based water retention material developed by an environmental venture originating from Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology.
